CHALLENGES FACING EFL TEACHERS IN IMPLEMENTING COMPETENCY-BASED APPROACH

This study made deeper analyses on challenges English teachers and students of high schools in Mali were facing when teaching or learning under the Competency-Based Approach (CBA) in the academic year 2019 - 2020. There were 250 participants: 37 teachers of English and 2013 students of high schools from 10 to 12 grades. They were all from four high schools in Kati namely: Lycée Mamby Sidibé de Kati, Lycée Privé Moderne de Kati, Le Prytanée Militaire de Kati And Lycée Privé Moussa Balahira de Kati.
To collect the data, a questionnaire was given to each of the participants which they filled and returned. In addtion to that there had been a face to face interview with every teacher. Teachers and students had differeent questionnaires.
The study revealed that for the teacher the main challenges are: lack of traning, lack of revelant resources, difficulties to prepare a lesson plan under CBA, difficulties to assess students with the CBA.
Concernig the students, there’s the mother tongue interference, they were not exposed to the language. In fact they don’t have the possibility to practice their english except in English class. They are not motivated to learn english at all.
