چکیده مقاله
On the basis of sociocultural theory and the concept of scaffolding in the zone of Proximal Development which was drawn from one theory, the researchers hypothesized that scaffolding affects the word recognition and sentence comprehension abilities of young children. This experimental study used the group comparison, the randomized pre-test, post-test control design. Fifty-three junior students whose ages range from 12 to 15 years were randomly assigned in the experimental and control groups. The pre-test results indicate that all the participants have equal performances in word recognition and sentence comprehension. These results show equality and heterogeneity of both groups before the experiment. The lessons provided to the experimental group as scaffold were designed to give enrichment and assistance through the use of the teacher’s modelling, giving cues, providing lots of examples, using multimedia, and highlighting difficult features. Findings from the study supported the hypothesized effects of scaffolding on the learners’ zone of Proximal Development. The participants who experienced the scaffolding activities have higher performance level in their post-test than those in the control group. The results further confirmed that learners are in equal footing as far as the zone of actual development is concerned.
