MALL-based Consciousness_ Raising Strategy in Iranian EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Learning

Vocabulary learning has always been a major concern for nearly all Iranian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The purpose of the current study was to encourage teachers to apply consciousness_ raising strategy using technology to improve both vocabulary learning and distance education in Iran. The study investigated the effect of integrating consciousness_raising strategy with Instant Messaging (IM) application known as WhatsApp on Iranian EFL learners’ vocabulary learning. Thirty students, studying English at one institute in Birjand, participated in the study. The participants were sampled randomly and assigned into two groups of experimental and control group. They were given a pre-test for the purpose of indicating their equality regarding their prior knowledge of targeted vocabulary items. Then, a WhatsApp group was created for the experimental group to receive two vocabulary items per day during the two week experiment. The students were encouraged to discuss the targeted vocabulary items use with the instructor’s participation while the control group was instructed by traditional method. They were presented with the Persian translation of those targeted vocabulary items and they were to memorize them. Running related parametric statistics, the results revealed that integrating consciousness_rasing strategy with IM using WhatsApp significantly affected participants’ learning the targeted vocabulary items.
