Mixed-ability classes have always been one of the greatest detriments to students' English learning in both English language institutions (ELIs) and the schools. There has been a growing concern for the teachers and the teaching experts over the effect of the mixed-ability classes on individual learners' learning process. Luckily there are plenty of ways to reduce the noxious diversity in the institutions, such as placement tests, flexible lesson plan, and absence of a fixed and firm curriculum. This study aims to have a quick look at the school mixed ability classes, considering the suggesting solutions for this situation. This study involves thirty-four female EFL students who are studying in the twelfth grade of high school in a school in Iran. the ideas were suggested to the teacher through a form adopted by (Penny Ur (2016).100 teaching tips. Cambridge handbook for language teachers: Scott Thornbury) which was distributed online. The form addressed this issue on various levels and the four skills. The results indicated that the frequency of the cases of challenges in the teaching of mixed-ability classes was high and as a result it required appropriate solutions. Class management, grouping, and individual differentiation strategies were found to be the most effective suggestions in reducing the adverse effects which mixed-learning abilities have on learning achievements. Strategies that seem to work better were more focused on. |
