The Effect of SQ3R Technique on Motivating Academic IELTS Candidates’ Reading Skill

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of SQ3R technique on motivating academic IELTS candidates’ reading skill. Moreover, the present study investigated the impact of this technique on the improvement of reading skill of Iranian language learners. To achieve these goals, 50 intermediate-level participants were selected from the 75 Nashr and Sepideh language Institutes in Ahvaz city through Oxford placement test. Then, the participants were randomly divided into two equal groups of control and experimental. After dividing the students, Gardner Motivation Questionnaire (2004) was given to both groups to determine their level of motivation before receiving the instruction. In the second session, both groups took a pre-test of reading comprehension. From the third session to the 14th session, the researcher taught the experimental group reading skill through the SQTR technique while the control group received instruction through traditional method. After completing the instruction, participants were given the motivation questionnaire to measure the impact instruction on motivation level. To determine the effect of instruction on participants' reading comprehension, the researcher-made reading comprehension post-test was administered to the participants. Paired t-test and independent t-test were used to calculate the collected data. The findings showed that the experimental group had more motivation at the end of the instruction than the control group and there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. The results also showed that the experimental group performed better in the reading comprehension test than the control group.
