Abstract: This study examined the effect of using massed instruction versus spacing instruction on Iranian intermediate EFL learners' Idiom Learning. Participants taking part in this study were 60 boys and girls EFL learners. This sample was divided into four groups of massed (boy and girl) and spaced (boy and girl). Instrument utilized in this study were placement text, idiom pre-test, treatment sessions, and idiom post-test. All 4 groups learned 5 units of idiom book " English idiom in use" with massed and spaced instruction. Girl and boy massed groups received the first unit in just one session while girl and boy spaced groups learned this unit in three sessions and with intervals. The researcher taught each unit in an intensive 45 minutes' session to massed groups, whereas the unit was taught to the both spaced groups in three 15-minute short sessions. The materials of every session for massed groups were taught in five uninterrupted sessions. On the other hand, the same amount of material of each session for spaced groups was taught in 15 sessions with 2 days of spacing gap in between every session. Findings showed that spaced groups of boy and girl outperformed massed groups (boy and girl) and received better score in their post-test. |
