The effect of EFL teachers' cultural awareness of the target language on language teaching

چکیده مقاله
In learning a second language students must be aware that what we consider as normal in one culture can be different in another. In this paper, the role of teachers in teaching cultural aspects of the second language and their attitude toward the target language culture has been focused. In this research a qualitative design was used with a convenient sampling of 10 EFL male and female students of Shahid Rajaee teacher training university who were all high school teachers. All of the participants were Persian native speakers with the age range of 24 to 31. In this study our instrument was the interview questions which was designed to measure the role of teachers in developing cultural awareness in classrooms. The results of the interviews were analyzed and classified based on the key factors and themes such as means of introducing the culture, the level of teacher’s cultural awareness, the teacher’s attitude toward the second language culture and the obstacles. Findings of the study show that the teachers were not much knowledgeable in cultural aspects of the target language. The main obstacles in teaching cultural factors in classrooms were listed as limiting policies, contradiction and contrast with native culture norms and moralities, lack of enough content and the last but not least is the deficiencies of the published high school textbooks with regard to cultural content. the results of the study can shed light on the way of planning one culturally integrated second language teaching curriculum.
