چکیده مقاله
Over the past decade, technology has been used extensively by L2 learners to develop their linguistic and communicative competence. Cell phones, in particular, can be employed to record student voices for self-reflecting on pronunciation and intonation. The current mixed methods study examined the effects of practicing pronunciation and intonation by listening to self-audio-recorded voices. In the quantitative phase, 54 male elementary EFL learners, aged between 13 and 16, in four classes in a language institute participated in the study with a pretest and posttest design for its pronunciation test (th and r sounds and initial consonant clusters) and intonation test (rising and falling in yes/no questions and wh- questions). The experimental group practiced pronunciation through reflecting on their self-audio-recorded voices by selecting and rehearsing a sample sentence from their material in their level, recording and listening to their voices, comparing their pronunciation with the sample, further rehearsing, and finally sending the best audio to their instructor via Telegram. The control group practiced pronunciation by going through a similar amount of practice, but without recording and sending their voices. After ten sessions of intervention, the results revealed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in pronunciation and intonation. In the qualitative phase, the perspectives of 18 participants suggested that the experimental group perceived relative similarity of their pronunciation and intonation with the selected audio extracts; the control group participants perceived some progress in this respect. The study has important implications for EFL learners and teachers alike.
