This study aimed at comparing the impact of learner-selected vs. teacher-assigned pairs on expository writing accuracy and writing anxiety of Iranian intermediate EFL learners. In order to conduct the study, 100 female intermediate English language learners whose ages ranged from 16 to 20 were asked to participate in the OPT test, and 60 learners whose scores fell between one standard deviation below and above the mean were selected to participate in the study. They were randomly assigned into two experimental groups. Then the participants in both groups filled out the writing anxiety questionnaire and participated in the pretest. Later the treatment sessions began; during which, the participants in the first group did the writing activities in the learner-selected pairs and those of the second group did them in the teacher-assigned pairs. Finally, all the participants filled out the writing anxiety questionnaire once more and took part in the writing posttest. The results of the data analysis showed that using both learner-selected and teacher-assigned pairs had a statistically significant effect on expository writing accuracy of Iranian EFL learners but there was no statistically significant difference between their effects. Moreover, it was revealed that using learner-selected pairs had a statistically significant effect on reducing the writing anxiety level of Iranian EFL learners. The findings might be significant for EFL teachers, language institutes, and teacher trainers. |
