The Effect of Teaching Grammar through Flipped Instruction on EFL Learners' Expository Writing |

The present study aimed at investigating the effect of teaching grammar through flipped instruction on Iranian EFL learners' expository writing. To this end, a number of 64 out of 75 Iranian male EFL learners were selected as the sample of the study through administrating an Oxford Placement Test (OPT). The selected intermediate-level participants were randomly assigned into an experimental and a control group. Then, both groups were pretested by English composition writing. The learners in the experimental group were required to watch and study the contents related to the target instruction through WhatsApp messenger before coming to the class. They could ask questions, provide feedback to their peers’ questions or post relevant videos, audios and files to the group. The control group was exposed to grammatical instruction with the same textbook followed by watching the related video clips or listening to audios inside the classroom using traditional teaching strategies. Then, after 14 sessions of treatment, the post-test was given to both groups. The result of the Mann-Whitney U Test for the comparison of the writing scores showed a statistically significant difference between the control and the experimental groups regarding their writing scores in favor of the experimental group. Therefore, EFL teachers are recommended to use flipped instruction for teaching grammar since it provides a dynamic and interactive learning condition which breaks down the limitations of time and space. |
