چکیده مقاله
The present study aimed at examining the impact of summary instruction (i.e., written and oral) on intermediate EFL learners’ reading skill in various conditions (i.e., collaborative versus individual). Thus, Preliminary English Test (PET), as well as First Certificate in English (FCE) reading pre-test, and immediate post-test were utilized for data collection purposes. 120 Iranian EFL intermediate female and male students participated in the study. The participants were divided into two main conditions (i.e., collaborative and individual). Moreover, each condition encompassed three groups, that is, written summary, oral summary, and control groups. Immediate post-tests followed the treatment that lasted for 6 sessions. A series of one-way ANOVA and a series of independent-samples t-tests revealed that summary instruction, particularly the oral one, was more efficient in promoting the EFL learners’ reading skill; furthermore, the collaborative groups outperformed the individual groups in reading. The implications are discussed regarding the development of EFL learners’ reading skill.
