چکیده مقاله
Gener is a major concept in English for Academic Purposes literature. Among the prevailing genres, the research article abstract plays a pivotal role in the academic discourse communities. Despite the abundance of research on identifying the constituent moves of this academic genre, the variations in its generic structure within a single venue of publication seem to have remained untouched. To bridge this gap, the current study aimed to explore the constituent moves of the research article abstracts published in a locally published journal in the field of EAP, The Iranian Journal of English for Academic Purposes, within the last two years to see if they followed the same established generic pattern in the existing literature. Drawing on Hyland’s (2000) Five Move Model (Introduction, Purpose, Method, Product, Conclusion), the results of genre analysis of 55 research article abstracts revealed that almost half of them conformed to the M1-M2-M3-M4-M5 pattern and the rest of the abstracts followed different patterns. The results indicated that the given model could hardly account for the abstracts in the locally published journal in the field of EAP. Results showed that the most frequent moves were Move 2 (53), Move 4 (51), and Move 3 (51), respectively while Move 5 (40) and Move 1 (38) seemed to be conceived as non-obligatory ones by the corresponding authors and editorial board. The findings unfolded the within-journal variations of the generic structure of research article abstracts and might carry implications for the local academic discourse community and academic writing instructors.
