چکیده مقاله
The present study was an attempt to investigate the effect of digital storytelling on Iranian EFL learners’ speaking ability. To do so, 42 intermediate language learners participated in the present study. They were selected from among a population of students sitting for the Oxford Quick Placement Test, with those categorized as intermediate learners based on the specifications of the test being included in the study. They were then randomly assigned into two groups of 21 as the experimental and control group. A pretest of English speaking was administered to both groups. They then underwent English instruction for 20 sessions. While the control group received the usual instruction based on the requirements and the educational policies set by the institution in which data collection was done, the experimental group received the same usual instruction as the control group plus digital storytelling, in which learners were given a topic and a purpose with a number of pictures to which they had to add their own pictures and prepare a story to tell the class in the following session. At the end of the program, a speaking posttest was administered to both groups using the same trained raters as in the pretest. The results of the mixed between-within subjects ANOVA indicated that the experimental group could significantly outperform the control group over the course of the treatment as the result of undergoing digital storytelling together with the usual instruction they received. This indicates the effectiveness of this technique in improving learners’ speaking ability.
