Pragmatic Features in ELT Textbooks: A Case Study of American English File Series |

Language learners may not be aware of socially and culturally appropriate forms of the second language so they must be provided with language materials that present authentic-like examples to develop their pragmatic competence. The purpose of this study is to investigate pragmatic devices presented through metalanguage features in American English File as a series of ELT textbooks widely used in English language institutes in Iran. Searle's (1969) taxonomy of speech acts, Brown and Levinson’s (1978) politeness principle and Levinson’s (2002) deixis classification were used to analyze the corpus. The results revealed that the bald on-record strategy was used more frequently compared to positive politeness strategy and the negative politeness strategy. In addition, the off-record indirect strategy was employed less than other principles. Moreover, three types of deixis, namely person deixis, place deixis, and time deixis were seen in the series but with different frequencies. Also, except the declarative speech act, all other speech acts were found, with assertive speech act being employed more frequently than other speech acts. Directive, expressive, and commissive speech acts were the next frequent speech acts, respectively. Furthermore, the results showed that there as not much direct explanations on pragmatic rules in these books. In other words, the amount of pragmatic information in these books is much away from being suitable source for L2 learners to gain pragmatic competence. Implications suggest that textbook developers may include authentic examples of speech acts and sufficient explicit metapragmatic explanations to facilitate acquisition of pragmatic competence. |
