چکیده مقاله |
Lexical bundles make up a large part of the academic texts and have structural correlates and important discourse functions that contribute to the creation of the text itself. The use of lexical bundles as a particular type of word combination in various genres and disciplines has received a great deal of attention in academic discourse. Lately there has been a shift from studying individual lexical elements to studying multi-word terms. Accordingly, the focus of this cross-cultural comparative study is to investigate the use of lexical bundles in the abstract sections of English medical research articles written by native and non-native writers. To this end, 100 research articles written by Iranian and English native speakers were randomly selected from the Medical research articles published in leading journals. The criteria for the selection of native and non-native corpus were the author's name and affiliation. The data were analyzed by means of AncConc concordance to find out the more prominent lexical bundles. The results showed that non-native writers used more lexical bundles (74%) compared to native speaker writers (26%) in the abstract sections. Moreover, 4-word lexical bundle had few occurrences in the two corpora indicating that 4-word level lexical bundles are not popular in writing English abstract sections in medical science research articles and using 4-word level lexical bundles does not necessarily suggest a fine command of English. |
