چکیده مقاله |
Despite the interwoven relationship between learning literary texts and L2 learner identity construction, investigating how native short stories translated into English play a role in reconstructing learner identity in tertiary contexts has been under-presented. The previous investigations seem to focus on the impacts of teaching English stories on second language learners’ identity. This study analyzes how learning English through translated Persian stories affects the identity construction of undergraduate TEFL students. The materials taught were three translated Persian short stories of loyalty, justice, and love conceptualizations entitled The Story of Shahrayar and Shahrazad, Justice, and The Broken Cup. Four undergraduate TEFL students studying at Yazd University were selected through maximum variation sampling. The researchers explored learner identity construction through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires. They applied qualitative content analysis to analyze the data related to the learners’ self-images of the initial and story-based instruction stages and their aspirations. The findings revealed significant alterations in the emotional and attitudinal states of the participants during the semester. The participants attributed their willingness to invest in the story-based activities to their socio-cultural familiarity with the story content. All participants found their native language and culture scaffolding their target language practices. They also reported consistent positive self-images associated with the appreciation of Persian history, literature, and culture. The findings could enlighten Iranian material developers and curriculum designers to incorporate literary texts from the native literature into language education materials. |
