Prepositions play an important role in language. English prepositions are characterized by polysemy. In this paper a new trend in teaching English spatial prepositions was investigated based on cognitive linguistics. Spatial prepositions are those prepositions which show path and place. Cognitive linguistics deals with the interaction of language and cognition; and according to cognitive semantics, the figurative senses of a preposition are extended from its spatial senses through conceptual metaphors. In a pedagogical context it may be useful to draw learners' attention to those aspects of spatial preposition's sense that are relevant to metaphorization processes. This paper examined possible ways in which cognitive linguistic analyses of spatial prepositions could be used to facilitate comprehension problems of these prepositions, and investigated the methods by which cognitive linguistics could help teachers to clarify the meaning and function of spatial prepositions. It also studied the deficiencies of some grammar books in explaining and clarifying spatial prepositions. According to cognitive linguistics, especially cognitive semantics, different models for spatial preposition was mentioned. The method of this paper was desk research. The results of this study would be helpful for grammarians and teachers in order to have a better analysis of spatial prepositions and improve pedagogical materials. |
