چکیده مقاله |
This study investigated the effects of explicit and implicit teaching of interactional meta-discourse markers and their manifestation in medical students’ patients’ reposts. The targeted interactional meta-discourse markers included hedges, boosters, attitude markers, engagement markers, and self-mentions extracted from the proposed categories by Hyland and Tse, (2004). This study adopted a quasi-experimental design. For this purpose, fifty students of Jundi Shapour Medical School were selected and put in two groups. Both groups took a pre-test on writing the patients' records in 100 words. The writings were scored by two writers to get the inter-rater reliability of scoring method based on a given checklist. The experimental group entertained explicit instructions of using interactional meta-discourse markers via explanation and the control group received traditional instructions like exemplification in writing the patients' records. The treatment lasted 12 sessions, each 60 minutes. Finally, the participants took a post-test with the same contents. The data were analyzed through Paired and Independent Samples T-test to locate any significant differences between the performances of both groups in terms of using the interactional meta-discourse markers in reporting the patients' records. The results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control one significantly. The findings of this study may suggest that the writing of patients' records among Medical students necessitates explicit instructions since they might face problems in using appropriate functions of interactional meta-discourse markers in writing effective reports. |
