Assessing writing skill is constantly considered as one of the main and the most problematic aspects in a language learning setting. Performance assessment (PA) developed by Brookhart (2015) is based on learners' performance and evaluating with clear criteria. PA followers maintained that traditional measurement failed to show true level of abilities and potentials of learners as the main focus is merely on the final scores of a course. This study intends to inquire into the influence of applying formative PA in writing skill improvement and also the effects of applying rubrics to writing performance assessment at Iranian educational setting. Forty-five junior high school students were selected to participate in five weeks of writing sessions. Independent sample T-test and pair sample T-test have been handled for this study. Results indicated meaningful difference between control group and experimental group in using PA tasks with Iranian learners with noteworthy improvement in their writing ability. Further analysing the data also revealed that applying rubrics to PA tasks improve the writing skill. As an important implication hint, findings of this study may suggest insightful recommendations and proposals to the EFL test developers as well as those involved in educational administrations. Syllabus designers, curriculum planner, material developers, and also the learners interested in learning EFL can benefit from this study. |
