Applicability of Translation and Interpretation in Teaching/Learning English Language |

Translation is an activity that aims to facilitate the communication process by interpreting the information received in one language (L1) into another language (L2), and vice versa. The main objective of this study is to consider the use of interpreting and translation in language learning. Primarily, it looks into some benefits of using interpreting and translation in improving students’ second language (L2-English) abilities by closely examining the nature of the students’ experiences. Semi-structured interviews of 20 volunteer students were conducted. The findings show that the students developed their L2 skills. They also engaged in an active learning through interpreting and translation activities. It is proposed that translation may contribute to enhance the learner’s accuracy of the L2, which will eventually encourage development of their linguistic and communicative skills in both languages, particularly their L2. It can be concluded that the tendency to demonstrate medium support for the use of translation to learn English vocabulary, to read, to write, and check comprehension; and the tendency not to use translation to learn English idioms, phrases, expressions, proverbs, and grammatical rules can be seen among participants. So, it is promoted that interpreting and translation are apt for language teaching and learning, mainly at the university level. The pedagogical implications of the results for English language teaching are discussed. |
